You have worked hard to learn the basics of eating disorder work as a dietitian, you are building confidence in your skills, maybe you have even worked in the field for some time now. AND with all that skill building there has still been part of this work that intimidated you, made you feel inadequate, uncomfortable, or unsure. Dietitians aren’t trained enough in counseling skills and when it comes to trauma the training is null. And yet, we spend day in and day out working with people who have experienced trauma. There is a high correlation between trauma and eating disorders, so if you are working with eating disorders, the trauma is in the room whether or not your are ready for it. Lack of training in this space can leave us vulnerable to feeling at least uncomfortable in our sessions and at worst, burnt out or even causing harm (which by the way I see you and know this is the very last thing you want!!)

Here are just a few of the multitude of ways learning about trauma is beneficial:

  • Develop a better understanding of how trauma affects individuals physically and mentally

  • Improve empathy and communication skills when interacting with trauma survivors

  • Provide appropriate support and care, contribute to the healing and recovery process,

  • Help prevent retraumatization

  • Enhance personal and professional relationships

  • Learn to sit with you own stuff in sessions

You want to learn more and know it will help both you and your clients. BUT every time you look to learn more about trauma it is coming from therapists. Therapists are awesome (they are who I have learned the most from), and they don’t always know the details of how trauma will show up in our sessions as dietitians. They are also speaking from their therapist lens which means we can’t just extrapolate their teachings to stay within our scope of practice. We are pretty cool as dietitians (Bias I know) We have immense knowledge about food, digestion, and nourishment that intricately correlates with trauma and eating disorder recovery. I know many of you would love to know more about how to make these connections to better support your clients in their healing.

That’s where I come in.
